Video: 2010 Fall Round-Up Part1

Though our blogging slowed during the holiday season, we were not entirely useless. We managed to get out a few times despite our varied schedules. The following video and at least one more to come will cover the explorations and excursions we managed to get in over the past 6 - 8 weeks.

Enjoy!

Southern Spring Splash!

On Friday, Rick and I joined Sheri G. and her friends, Cathy and Marion from the Fayetteville area, for lunch at the Gid Waterfall before also visiting the Gristmill Waterfall nearby. Sheri (who is Rick's big sister) and Cathy were classmates and close childhood friends.

Cathy, who was raised in Izard County, had visited the Gid Waterfall as a teenager and happened to see it on our site a couple of years ago. We were happy to have been able to take her and her husband to see both waterfalls and both Rick and I thoroughly enjoyed their company...as well as their absolutely scrumptious chicken salad!

Homage to Winter in Anticipation of Spring!

Excitement builds each year for us at EIC at each chance of a good snow. Driving the backroads of Izard County when the hills are blanketed in snow gives one a similar feeling as stepping out on the town with your hot-clad sweetheart!

A "similar feeling" because, unlike a night out with your beautiful soulmate, one is most likely glad when an icy rendezvous is over.

An encounter or two per year satisfies the lust for snowy drives!

Therefore, in the hope of Redbuds and Dogwoods, we pay homage to Winters past while inviting glorious Spring!

The video below is compiled of photos and video from the winters of 2007-2009.

ENJOY!

Tan Trough Creek & Hollow

Tan Trough Creek begins as a stream seeping from acres and acres of glade rock north of Calico Rock. The little stream gathers size as it follows a deepening hollow to plunge nearly 100 feet to a canyon floor below through a semi-cylinder of stone! The creek then flows through the most amazing canyon we've encountered in Izard County...possibly even the Ozarks...this part of them at least. It's unique and quite wonderful!

For hundreds of yards, sheer bluffs of around 100 feet or more line each side of this creek. At one point, the tops of the bluffs on each side of the canyon are nearly within jumping distance of each other. As Rick and I searched for a way to get down to the creek bottom, we were forced to hike several hundred yards before finding a navigable way down. As we fought our way back up the creek through briars, saplings, and last year's ice-storm fall-out, we were rewarded with fantastic views of the bluffs above us as well as with discovering small waterfalls and caves in the faces of the bluffs. We also found the spring of which we were told by our guide, David Wilson. had supplied water to a home atop the bluff by way of an ingenious pumping method which used the force of falling water to drive a piston. Some of the device still remains at the spring.

Just above the spring is the waterfall, which paired with the springwaters, creates the headwaters of Tan Trough Creek.

Our time was limited while there. The canyon is so massive, we must return to explore it more. We were also told of other interesting features farther down the creek which we intend to investigate.

Izard County is truly mysterious! We're amazed that every few weeks, the county reveals some other magnificent attribute for our enjoyment...something that makes us proud we have a connection with this place!

Watch the video below, and enjoy! We'll put some photos up tomorrow but you must see the video. Our modest equipment only gives our reader's a glimpse of this amazing place!

Flat Rock Hollow: Sentinel Valley Traverse

Video Below!

This past weekend, we explored Flat Rock Hollow below the two waterfalls we've visited before. The hollow winds between high bluffs and passes through one valley that hosts columns of standing stones on both ridges, hence our dubbing it "Sentinel Valley". We squeezed along one large fissure in a bluff before reaching our destination, an 80 - 100 foot high wet - weather waterfall! There is evidence that as the water approaches the precipice when the stream is running, it is sometimes 3 - 4 ft deep when it plunges to the forest floor below.
We've known about this waterfall for nearly two-years and were glad to have the opportunity to visit it. But...we must return this spring when the hills are alive with the sound of rushing water!

ENJOY!

Flat Rock (Sharp County)

Near Sidney in Sharp County, just across the Izard County line, is Flat Rock. It is a rock shelf with a small stream running across it that falls over...and through! Jim and I had set-out to visit this site the previous weekend but took a wrong turn and found the Saint Paul Cemetery, instead. Rick and Jim returned this past weekend and got a few photos and three video clips which are strung together below for your enjoyment!

Video: Rocky Bayou Traverse

The following video is a result of several short excursions the EIC Crew has made around Lunenburg and along Rocky Bayou the past few weeks. Rocky Bayou was a major source of water in the county for the pioneers and they took advantage of the wide, level creek-bottoms.

Enjoy!

ATTENTION!

We have not yet announced the event in the local media so that our readers will have first chance at the limited spaces available. We will be sending out press releases for next week.

Izard County Southern Falls Tour

Sunday afternoon, we had the pleasure of showing off the waterfalls in southern Izard County to the Batesville Daily Guard staff-writer/photographer, Tony McGuffey, and his wife, Roberta. We first went to the Gristmill Waterfall at Gid (bottom photos in post), then to the Gid Waterfall (middle of post), and finally to Dodd Hole (top). Tony and Roberta have their own photography website at T-Mac Photos.com.
Though cold and windy, we really enjoyed this outing with the McGuffeys!
