Vintage Photos: Dismantling of the 1914 Brick Clock Tower Courthouse

On the morning of December 5th, 1937, the majestic brick Clock Tower Courthouse, the third courthouse to be erected in Melbourne, burned leaving only a charred, empty hulk. The second courthouse, a frame structure, had been dismantled to make way for this beautiful building. Below are some more photos found at the Arkansas Tech University's "Arkansas Digital History Institute" web page showing the burned-out building as it was being dismantled by the NYA Resident Training Project in early 1938.

Mary Sue Estes, daughter of Goldie and Dale Estes, said that her mother said the documents were stored in the basement of the old courthouse where it was fireproof. I'm posting this comment for Mary Sue. (I am Katherine Novak, her cousin.) Also--If anyone can determine whether or not that house in picture #3 is the home of (Mary) Lena Estes, Mary Sue and I will most appreciate that info. Mary Sue and I are her granddaughters.
