Calico Rock/City Rock Bluff

Calico Rock is the most famous township in Izard County. The town is somewhat frozen in time. It was named for the Calico-colored bluffs which tower over White River.City Rock Bluff was featured in the cult-classic film, "the Bootleggers", back in the seventies. You may recall a locally famous scene where an old whisky-runner jalopy skidded to the edge of this bluff.

One has to wonder--with all the sight-seers that reavel through this area of the Ozarks each year--how many drive right on by the road leading to this bluff (only a two-mile detour on a GOOD gravel road (Culp Road)) without even knowing this awesome feature is there.

There used to be a Mr. Perryman who had a pharmacy in Calico Rock -- right there on main street, not far from the bridge. He came to Salem a couple of times to interview my grandfather, who was also a Perryman and had been in the Arkansas Legislature back in the 1930s. I stopped by that pharmacy a couple of times and also took the time to sightsee.

I wonder if the Perryman Pharmacy is still there. The man must have passed away, but I recall that one of his kids was running the place about 20 years ago.

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure if that pharmacy is still in business or not. It may be and might have moved up the hill close to the hospital.

I'll find out!

Jeffery,
I checked the phone book and Perryman's no longer exists. I vaguely remember the store being sold some years ago.

There is still a weathered roadside sign advertising the drug-store on highway 56.

I guess that the former things really are passed away.

Thanks for checking.

I'm trying to recall ... how high are those Calico Rock bluffs?

I'm pretty sure they tower about 300 ft over the river.

Hey, I keep checking this site and never see any updates on 'Lizard' County as we Fultonians used to call it.

I know, I knew, we're just a bunch of 'Fooltonians.'

Anyway, get away from your computer screen and take some more photos!

Jeffery,

Sorry! My camera USB is fried and I haven't ordered ne yet. I have a memory card FULL of photos and vid-clips but can't download them.

Keep checking in. I'll be posting again soon.

Cheers. Thanks for the interest!

The pharmacy is still in Calico, though it is no longer called Perryman's. It is now Mitchell's Park Street Pharmacy.

Cheers, Anon!

Reed Perryman moved Perryman Drug to the hospital area 1969. Sold the store to his daughter Brenda in the mid 80's. She sold the store to Mitchell's in late 90's. Brenda now lives in Mtn Home. Reed & wife Anita moved to Ozark MO a couple of years ago to be closier to his son & family. Reed & Anita are in their late 70's and in good health.

Thanks, Steve! Thanks for your visit as well.

I know this is an older thread, but I am friends with the Perryman family. Reed and Anita retired years ago and moved to Ozark, MO to be nearer their grandchildren. Reed's daughter took over the pharmacy (she is a pharmacist as well), which had by that time moved to a new building nearer the hospital on Hwy 56. She has sold the business to another local pharmacist, and works part-time as a pharmacist in Mtn. Home. Reed and Anita are going strong still, and we try to see them each summer when we go back home to Calico Rock. (I live in WI now.) My dad was the local dentist for decades, and my family (Hudson) still lives in the area.

Thanks, Marsha, for your input...and your interest in the site.

I've not only walked those tracks, I live right next to them. Our land adjoins the Swinging Bridge, which used to be a tourist draw. I'm glad to see someone revitalizing some history and introducing beautiful places that may otherwise be lost.

We had done just that for a year or two until a family member told us about it. *His aunt lives North (?) of Calico Rock. The first visit was truly breathtaking. Each visit there after has been too! (Altho last visit had some spray paint vandalism and broken glass and cans scattered around. We picked up what we could)
