Outdoors Wake-Up Call: Arkansas Flash Floods

What a tragedy! We're not even sure yet the names or ages of the victims...nor do we know the full details of the circumstances that led to these outdoor enthusiasts losing their lives in the other Arkansas Outback. There are certainly a number of questions that could arise from this overnight horror concerning the preparation of campers and actions/inaction of park authorities. Whatever direction this story takes, it is definitely a wake-up call to those who like to get out to remote areas and enjoy the outdoors!

Please, if you are planning on going to remote locations, be considerate of weather conditions and how they could affect the areas you will be visiting! Go prepared and with a plan! And have fun.

Our hearts go out to the families and friends affected by this terrible event.

Trek to Big Roundmouth!

After seeing the old Alvin Reeves Place, we took the opportunity to challenge the "chicks and tiggers" and take a hike to Big Roundmouth Cave and some bluffs nearby. Big Roundmouth Cave was formed when a cavern collapsed. The collapse left a 150 foot circular sinkhole with a rubble pile dividing two caves once joined. The land owner has had some of the cave mapped by certified cave-explorers in the recent past and plans to allow more expeditions into the cave to further map it.

Jack Hollow (Hurricane Creek)

Sunday afternoon, we took advantage of the mild weather to explore an area we've been wanting to check out for some time. We started hiking up Big Hurricane Creek from the bridge on Highway 9 into Jack Hollow. We were rewarded with a large rock formation along the north bluff to play on and a great hike along one of Izard County's most beautiful streams! This creek was important to the native-American population who used this land long before Europeans ever moved in and there is much evidence of their ancient presence all along the creek.
The bridge (shown in the photo) will soon be gone as another will replace it when the improvements to Highway 9 are completed.
