Return to The Melbourne Cave

The Melbourne Cave is located about 6 miles southwest of Melbourne near the area of Lone Star. It served as Melbourne's civil-defense shelter during the early days of nuclear uncertainty and a shed nearby still contains cans that once contained survival food and water. This living cave is filled with stunning formations including gigantic columns, beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, and lots of delicate crystalline structures. It is indeed a place of great awe-inspiring wonder, this virtually unknown cavern in the heart of Izard County!

Gilly's Cave (near Lone Star)

Below is a short video of a shelter cave we passed during a road-trip around a friend's property last month. Getting out with landowners is something we look forward to as we find new and interesting places around the county!

From Bayou to Backwoods!

Our crew had the pleasure of introducing one of them cajun-types from "down u-under" to our glorious part of dixieland last week. Here's a few photos from our creep through the Lone Star Trail.

Lone Star Cave

The cave is in the hollow next to the old Gray/Johnson place, a very old hand-hewn log cabin which is also pictured.
The critter is a cave salamander we became aqcuainted with while visiting.
